Liven up your workouts with friends!

“There’s strength in numbers.”

Why not work out with a pack!? Studies show that workouts are 95% more effective when people work out with their friends.

Working out in a “motivational pack” is becoming an increasingly preferred form of exercise.

“Group activity may not be a new concept, but it has certainly seen massive international up-trends over the last twenty years with rapidly rising numbers in strength training, aerobic and dance-based classes and the emergence tribe mentality,” says Rob McGillivray, personal trainer and founder of RETROFIT. “I believe it to be a key indicator that working out in a motivational pack or using it as a tool to enhance internal or external competitive performance is fast becoming the preferred form of exercise.”

When people work out with their buddies, they’re likely to go more often and push themselves harder.

The Köhler Effect is the idea that no one wants to be the weakest link in a group setting. When it comes to fitness, this translates to pushing yourself further when tasked with working out with people who are excelling more than you.

Along with an increased level of motivation throughout the workout group training keeps the average person more accountable. It’s not as easy to skip out on commitments if you know friends will call you on it later.

Many great things in life increase endorphins in our bodies, including physical activity and social interaction, which is why group workout classes are so popular throughout the country.

Whether it’s the idea of seeing your friend at the gym or the energy from a powerful group class; social workouts are more enjoyable than working out alone.

It’s also a great way to share in the fitness journey with other people, some further along that can share their tips and tricks, and others who may be struggling at the beginning stages. Hearing and taking part in these sharing sessions is incredibly therapeutic. More sociability in a world where friendships are limited to texting and emails, feeds the soul as well as the body. Working out with a group offers social interaction that is vital for your mental health.
