Be good to yourself!

  • News

Valentine’s Day is a day to be celebrated. But at Curves, we want you to concentrate on loving yourself rather than waiting to receive the more traditional, flowers, chocolate and cards – although they never go amiss too! Afterall, loving yourself is the first step to feeling good with others and can positively impact many areas of your life.

Focus on the positives

No matter what’s happening in your life, who you’re with or if you’re on your own, make the 14th of February a day to cherish, love and recognise what makes you, you. This whole process starts with concentrating on every positive aspect of your personality, improving how you see yourself and focusing on why you deserve to treat yourself to the best. So why not give some of these ways a try? You can thank us later.

  1. Create a List of Positivity

This may sound silly at first, however you will be amazed at how effective it can be. Try asking close family or friends to identify personal qualities that make you unique. Take these qualities and use them to build a ‘list of positivity’ that you can real whenever you are doubting or being too demanding of yourself. Simply stop, breathe and read – you’ll be shocked at how much better you will feel after installing some positivity in your day.

  1. Take care of your body

It’s one of the easiest ways to give yourself some ‘me’ time and make everything else disappear. Whether it’s spending an hour or two soaking in a warm bath, enjoying a muscle soothing massage, getting a deep stretch on or enjoying your favourite nutritious meal; whatever you’re doing, try to clear your mind of all your day-to-day worries and just enjoy being in the moment – focus solely on that one activity and you will feel great.

  1. Learn to say no

No matter what your situation is, the demands of life and the expectations of those nearest and dearest to your heart can make finding time for yourself a huge challenge. Between dedicating time to your loved ones and work, it's hard to even dream of stealing a little time for yourself.

Couple that with the guilt that many people, especially women, experience when they manage to find a few moments of time for themselves, and it becomes clear why so many people feel that finding time for themselves isn't worth the effort.

As overscheduled as our lives are these days, it can be quite a challenge to say ‘no’ and dedicate some time to yourself. However, at Curves we feel that this is important and therefore we suggest that you try some of these techniques that will help ‘take back’ some well-deserved time for yourself:

  • Use your full lunch hour – whether it is to read a book, get a sweat on at the gym or just have a wander.
  • Wake up a little earlier than everyone else – this is especially helpful if you have young children.
  • Temporarily disconnect from your gadgets for a few hours – we waste so much time on technology these days when we could be experiencing the natural beauty of the world around us.

Give these a go and find what works for you – the most important thing to remember is that you are doing this for yourself!

  1. Be mindful of meditation.

Gone are the days when meditation was viewed as something completely off the wall, it’s a super simple way to stop, take stock and calm your mind. Find somewhere quiet and comfortable, settle down and then focus on your breathing. If you can concentrate on this – even just for 10 mins – you’ll soon notice how much more calm and grounded you feel. Read our article to discover more about this.

  1. Buy yourself a bouquet of your favourite flowers.

Why wait for somebody to buy you flowers? Treat yourself to your favourite bunch, arrange them in your best vase and luxuriate in the fresh scent beautiful flowers can bring. Not only is it bringing a small piece of nature indoors, the benefits of having eye-catching blooms increases feelings of well-being and being more connected to the outside world.

  1. Open up a new horizon

If you normally don’t have time for recreational activities or have been waiting to get round to starting a new project. Now’s the time! Recreational activities such as trying your hand at painting, going for a hike and many other projects are a great way to calm your mind at the end of a frantic day or indeed, even a sneaky 20-minutes to read a book at lunchtime can take your mind off all the things that occupy your life the rest of the time. So go lose yourself in a new project.

  1. Take care of yourself in 30 minutes

An inactive lifestyle, the default for many office workers, students and retired people, does little to raise your self-confidence or your general sense of well-being. But looking good, feeling strong and having a positive attitude, the attributes of self-esteem, are all benefits of a regular exercise regime.

Regular exercise makes your heart and bones stronger, lowers your risk for chronic disease right along with your blood pressure, keeps your weight under control and reduces feelings of anxiety and depression. We appreciate that finding time to exercise within a busy working schedule can be hard, however that’s why our workout programme at Curves lasts only 30 minutes and targets all key muscle groups whilst looking to raise your overall fitness level.

Hopefully we’ve given you a few great ideas on how to celebrate Valentine’s Day in your own special way. But is the best way to celebrate you and your achievements still to come? To find out more please contact your nearest Curves club or book a free consultation now!
