Tips for Safely Exercising in Extremely Hot Weather

  • Health

Beat the heat and keep your summer workout habit on track with these summertime tips!

Drink Water all day, Not just after your workout!

Staying hydrated is important in all weather, but even more so as the temperatures heat up. Drinking water all day and staying hydrated will prevent some of the symptoms you may experience from exercising in heat such as dizziness, stomach cramp and headaches. Staying hydrated is key when you’re exercising in the heat. Drinking water improves your ability to sweat, a process that cools you down; and it replenishes liquids lost to heat.

Slow down your pace

When exercising in heat its ok to move with less intensity to avoid overheating. Work to your own pace and be safe.

Snack to maintain energy

Keep water-based snacks close-by. In the heat, avoid eating snacks such as protein bars, crisps or anything too savoury which will require water to wash down. When selecting foods to accompany you on your workout, consider fruits like watermelons, apple, pineapple and strawberries, as these will keep you refreshed and your energy levels up.

Dress for the weather

To keep as cool as possible wear workout gear that’s lightweight, breathable, loose, and to reflect the heat, light in colour. Ideally choose clothing with vents or mesh. Go for workout clothes made from a synthetic material with high “wicking” properties. Workout clothes made of cotton material can also help the evaporation of sweat.
