Our advice for a summer in great shape

Here comes the sun

With summer finally here, we all want to make the most of the longer days and balmy nights. But with an increased number of commitments and plans, those on a weight loss journey can find it difficult to juggle staying in shape as well as keeping on top of everything else.

To help you enjoy summer without feeling guilty for having fun, we have compiled the following tips:

Tip #1: Workout in the morning

With the sun rising early during the summer months, this gives you the perfect chance to get up and make the most of the bright mornings. Why not set your alarm earlier than normal and start your day off at your nearest Curves gym? Not only does this mean you can tick a good workout off your to-do list, but also enjoy an increase in energy throughout the day.

Working out early allows you to focus on exercising with less chance of interruptions, gets your day off to a great start and allows you to get on with what you need to throughout the busy day.

Tip #2 Always contribute something healthy

Good weather means an increase in BBQs and garden parties, usually involving buffet food. If you want to stick to a healthy diet, make sure you bring something with you such as a salad or crudities as a contribution, so you know that you can eat something guilt-free.

Tip #3 Preparation is key

The longer days also give you more time to prepare homemade snacks and lunches meaning you can take advantage of fresh, seasonal produce without having to worry about additional calories leading to weight gain.

Tip #4 Stay hydrated

Always ensure you stay hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water per day. If this sounds like too much, then try our healthy alternatives to water to reach your target.

Carrying a reusable water bottle is not only environmentally friendly, but will act as a reminder to drink water throughout the day.

Tip #5 Sleep more

Make sure you’re getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Rest is necessary to recharge your batteries and give you enough energy to face the day ahead! It can even prevent weight gain by regulating your metabolism. Studies have shown that people who sleep well and are less stressed have greater weight loss success. Managing your sleep level is key to positive well-being and exercise has also been proven to improve the quality of your sleep.

If you have trouble getting to sleep you can try creating a regular, relaxing bedtime routine, avoiding using your phone or mobile device in bed or having a warm bath before bed.

Tip #6 Get outside

Summer is an excellent opportunity to spend more time outdoors. Take advantage of the good weather and choose to walk more, get out on your bike or enjoy the benefits of running outside. Exercising in nature is also said to have an incredible impact on your mental well-being.

Reach your goal of 10,000 steps by ditching the car and walking to your Curves gym before your workout or leave the office on your lunch break and take a stroll in the sun instead.

Tip #7 Set summer goals

To keep you motivated during the summer months, why not set some mini-goals to help you to stay on track with your weight loss mission. Goals can include ensuring you go to Curves three times a week, cutting out sweet treats or fitting into your favourite dress by the end of summer.

Tip #8 Find a workout buddy

Having a gym buddy can make a big difference to you achieving your goals. Grab a friend, neighbour or co-worker to join you at Curves to encourage you to stick with your fitness routine.

With a buddy you’re less likely to cancel your workout and you can act as each other’s support system. By setting workout goals together, you can cheer and push each other to go the extra mile.

And always ensure you have your next workout in your diaries to stop other summer events getting in the way.

Tip #9 Buy some new workout gear

Why not give your workout wardrobe a summer update for some extra motivation? Brighten up your gear with summer colours and lightweight clothing, add some fun prints or try a new style to flatter your figure. You’ll feel confident, better in your own skin and ready to smash your daily workout.

Tip #10 Don’t forget your Curves travel pass

Be sure to ask the staff at your Curves club for a travel pass so you can visit a club near your holiday spot. You’ll be warmly welcomed and might make new friends! You may even pick up a few local travel hints, tips, and suggestions for things to see and do.
