Five healthy ways to start your day

  • Health

The way we live our lives is the way we live our days – Do you want a healthier life in 2019? Start your days in a healthier way!
The perfect start every morning might not exist, at least not with the busy lifestyles we all lead! But you can take a few steps to start the way you mean to go on each morning and create a healthy routine that could make a real difference to the rest of your day. We’ve created five steps you can build into whatever morning routine you already have and hopefully will enhance the way you feel about the day ahead. After all, when you’re used to having a more positively structured morning routine, it makes life that bit easier and you could reap the benefits sooner than you think.

  1. Smile!

We’ll start with the easy one first. When that alarm goes off and before you even get out of bed, instead of reaching for the snooze button, let a big grin spread across your face. Seems strange? Well when you smile it signals to your brain to release the feel-good chemicals like endorphins, dopamine and serotonin which are all proven to lift your mood, relax your body, and lower your heart rate. So you can kick-start your morning without even getting out of bed!

  1. Hydrate with a twist

Drinking water at the right time is absolutely vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Not only is a glass of water in the morning a great way to start getting hydrated for the day ahead, if you add some fresh lemon juice to a warm glass of water, it helps to stimulate your metabolism and digestion, increases your vitamin C intake and even helps to neutralise bad breath. It’s an easy way to get your day off to a truly refreshing start.

  1. Don’t touch that smart phone

With so many people using their smart phone as their alarm too, it’s so easy to switch your alarm off and then start checking your phone for personal or work emails, or any social notifications you may have. If you do this, then your brain swings straight into a reactive state and you start on a defensive footing which can continue throughout the day. Try and leave your phone alone for the first hour after you wake, that way, you can start your day without distractions and focus on your own well-being rather than what’s going on in the outside world.

  1. Eat a healthy breakfast

It’s called the most important meal of the day for a reason. And the great thing about breakfast is that is doesn’t take too long to make a really healthy one – you can even prepare it the night before. By focusing on lean proteins, fresh fruits, whole grains and healthy fats your energy levels will get a steady boost throughout the morning, fuelling you until lunch and improving your focus and concentration levels.
