4 Myths about strength training

If you flinch every time someone recommends strength training, you aren’t alone. Lots of women get nervous about building muscle. Why? Because over the years building muscle has gotten a bad rap. But the truth is that strength training is one of the best things you can do for your body, metabolism and confidence. Let’s break down some of the biggest myths that keep women from taking their workouts to the next level.

Myth #1: Lifting weights makes you bulk up.

The strength training you find on the circuit such as Curves’ circuit is designed to help you build lean muscle mass. This muscle is not going to give you bulk. In fact, as you build muscle your body will tighten in all the right places, to give you a firm, toned look that radiates health.

Myth #2: When you add lots of muscle you add weight.

Building muscle during the weight loss process can make the weight loss on the scale look like less. But you are getting the best of both worlds—fat loss and muscle gain. When you add muscle to your body, your metabolism actually speeds up. So when you are at rest and you have more muscle, your body is actually burning more calories. If you’re burning more calories every day, then you lose more weight. Instead of just referring to the number on the scale, take body measurements monthly to see progress in centimeters lost.

Myth #3: Strength training isn’t good for your body.

Some people worry that strength training is too taxing for their bodies. Strength training actually helps build bone density. If you begin your strength training workouts in a well-structured and carefully-monitored environment like Curves, then you can be sure you will never take on more than you can handle.

Myth #4: Women who are strong aren’t feminine.

We are lucky to live in a time when strength is actually a sign of femininity. In fact, some of the most feminine women in the world show strength in all kinds of areas of life—from the business world, to politics, in classrooms and in the home. The more strength you build the more confidence you will have—not just in your ability to lift and carry heavier objects but also in how you carry yourself. Strength is beauty.

To find out more about how you can incorporate strength training into your exercise routine, find a Curves club near you. The Curves circuit has strengthened the bodies and lives of millions of women and you can be next.
